Q #1: How long will the backup take?
For the typical home user on a regular DSL/Broadband connection, data uploads to Datasurvivor range from around 10GB-15GB per 24-hour period. This calculation assumes no other very upload-intensive tasks are running at the same time. Upload speeds will vary greatly depending on your geographical location and bandwidth. Users with a lot of data that will compress and de-duplicate well, or those residing on a very fast internet connection may experience far superior upload speeds – in excess of 40 to 50 GBs per day and more. At the same time, users in remote areas or those with slow connections could experience slower upload speeds than mentioned.
Q #2: How do I restore files?
Easy. Fast. Secure. Should you suffer the unfortunate event of a hard-drive failure or a lost/stolen computer, you can restore your data simply by downloading the Datasurvivor application on your new machine and adding it to your Datasurvivor Network. Once complete, you will have access to all of your files. If you would like to have the files locally, you may do so by downloading any folders or files you like.
In addition, you will always be able to access and download folders and files over the Internet by logging into your account on the Datasurvivor web page using the web portal login.
Q #3: Does Datasurvivor use encryption when storing and transferring data?
Yes. Both. Always. Datasurvivor encrypts your data at every stage in the process – from uploading to storage to downloading again. This process ensures complete security and privacy at all times.
Datasurvivor is a “zero knowledge” backup provider. This means that we do not know anything about the data that you store on Datasurvivor — not even your folder or filenames.
Q #4: How hard is it to setup the initial backup?
Easy. Always. Upon downloading the Datasurvivor Livedrive application, you may select what items you would like to back up by clicking on a checkbox. It is that easy. And because our software constantly monitors any changes or additions to your selected folders, subsequent back ups occur automatically.
In order to ease the selection process, you can select to back up high-level categories of items such as Documents, Pictures, E-mail, or Music as well as specific folders in any of these categories.
Q #5: Does Datasurvivor keep multiple versions of files?
Yes. Always. Forever. Efficient storage of all historical versions of a file is built into the core Datasurvivor algorithm. This enables you to access any historical document from a specific point in time, from any machine in your Datasurvivor network.
If a file is ever damaged or deleted or accidentally overwritten, you will always have the option of downloading an earlier undamaged version.
Datasurvivor saves storage space using intensive data de-duplication. In this way, Datasurvivor can often keep all of the historical versions of a file, using about the same amount of space that would be required to store only the most recent version.
Q #6: Does Datasurvivor backup the whole file every time it changes?
No. Datasurvivor will scan the file and find only the changes, and store new data blocks for those areas of the file. This means that Datasurvivor is able to store all historical versions of a document using little additional space.
For example, if you’re working on a research paper, and add new sections, charts, and other information to it as you go along, Datasurvivor just stores these additional items. So, Datasurvivor will be able to store all of the historical versions of your research paper using about the same amount of space as would be needed to only store the most recent version.
Q #7: What happens if I disconnect from the Internet, or my connection dies during the backup?
If your internet connection fails, Datasurvivor will resume automatically whenever your network connection is reestablished.
You can see the status of the Datasurvivor server uplink in the “Control Panel” display on the status tab of the Datasurvivor application.
Q #8: Does Datasurvivor delete files if I delete them from my computer?
No. Datasurvivor never removes content from your backup without you explicitly requesting it. If you delete something from your computer, Datasurvivor will move the deleted item to the Garbage Bin display within under that computer. Deleted items stay in the garbage bin perpetually — until you decide to intentionally remove them.
Many backup services only store deleted items for a short period of weeks or months, and if you do not realize the need to recover that file within this time frame, the backup file will be lost. Datasurvivor prefers to take an all-inclusive approach.
Q #9: Can I use Datasurvivor on multiple computers? Servers? External hard drives?
Yes, Yes & Yes!. Each Datasurvivor account, allows you to backup UNLIMITED computers with any external hard drive(s), backing up as much or as little data as you need.
Datasurvivor’s goal is to provide a central place to safely and securely back up and store all your data, regardless of what computer, hardware, or operating system it exists on.
Datasurvivor simply charges a flat fee, no matter how much amount of storage you actually use within your Datasurvivor account.
Whenever new data is stored, Datasurvivor tries hard to store it in terms of references to existing data blocks. Datasurvivor is therefore able to retain all previous versions of files using very little extra space. Any duplicated data between however many computers you backup with Datasurvivor does not take any extra space.
Q #10: How does Datasurvivor’s pricing work?
Simple. There are 3 main services Datasurvivor Personal, Pro & Business with the addition of SurvivorDrive Breifcase which gives you a “desktop virtual drive” sizes from 500GB Available on the Pro Account only and 1TB available on the Business account. You can buy more at an amazing £3.49 per TB(Terrabyte).
